- Baptised 1747?, son of John and Margaret Barton of Beaconside??
- Married Isabella Mondeville?
- Lived at Beacon Hill Farm just north of Ivegill
- Also owned land opposite Broadfield House?
- Unknown relationship to other Ivegill Bartons
Possible baptism?
The
*High Head baptismal register contains the following entry:
"Anno 1747"
"June 17 Was baptized William Son of John and Margaret Barton of Beaconside"
This
could be the same man who lived at Beacon Hill Farm (see below) and had several children whose baptisms are in the same register (see below). He would have been 32 when he had his first child (Mary), and 53 when he had his last (Robert).
Children
The
*High Head baptismal register contains the following:
"
1779 - November 21 - Mary daughter of William Barton and Bella his wife of Beacon baptised
1784 - August 21 - was John son of William and Bella his wife of Beacon baptised
1788 - May 19th Joseph son of William Barton and Isabella his wife, late Mondeville, of Beacon Hill baptised
1790 - September 26 - Margaret, daughter of William Barton and his wife, late Mondeville, of Beacon Hill, baptised

The
*Dalston parish records contain the following:
"
1793 / August 24 Margaret, daughter of Wm: Barton of Beacon hill aged 3 years buried" (v2, p289).
Therefore...
With
Isabella Mondeville:
- Mary Barton (b.1779?)
- John Barton (b.1784?)
- Joseph Barton (b.1788?)
- Margaret Barton (1790-1793)
- William Barton (b.1794?)
- Robert Barton (b.1801?)
Beacon Hill Farm
There is a Beacon Hill Farm just NW of
Ivegill:
I (
DBHB) contacted the
current resident of Beacon Hill Farm, who is a tenant farmer renting from Smith Gore land agents of Carlisle. They informed me that they managed this property on behalf of the Church Commissioners for England, who purchased this and another neighbouring private property in the 1950s.
Land opposite Broadfield House
In November 2012, Jacqui kindly contacted me with the following land map dated 1812. It shows that a William Barton (highlighted red) owned land over the road from the Broadfield House estate (this map has been rotated to more closely match the map above). This could easily be part of the Beacon Hill farm lands:
Relationship to other Ivegill Bartons
We don't know how this William relates to the other Bartons in the area. If he is the son of John and Margaret Barton of Beaconside, who are they? Descendants of
Barnard Barton (d.1715)?
The William Barton who owned Beacon Hill is certainly too early to be
William Barton (1785-1846) of the coach-building line, and too late to be that man's grandfather
William Barton (1700-1763), or even the William Barton who
signs the 1763 probate of that William's will. Nor does he seem likely to have been
William Barton (1737-1818).
With respect to my line,
Bernard Barton of Carlisle (1728-1773) did have a son called William born in 1764 (about the right time), but this infant
died almost immediately.
